Experience one of the most extreme and fascinating landscapes on Earth. This 3-day Danakil Depression adventure takes you to the colorful geothermal wonders of Dallol, the vast salt plains of Lake Afdera, and the dramatic lava lake of Erta Ale volcano. Camp under the stars in one of the lowest points on the planet and witness Ethiopia’s raw geological power up close.

Day 1: Fly Addis Ababa – Semera – Ahmedela

Arrival at Semera Airport, where you will be met by your guide. After a short briefing about Ethiopian geology and the overall program, begin your adventure into the Danakil Depression. En-route, stop for lunch in Afdera town, home to the vast Lake Afdera, where traditional salt mining takes place. Continue driving deeper into the depression toward one of the lowest points on Earth. In the evening, arrive at Ahmedela, a small settlement where salt caravans gather before their long journey to nearby towns. Overnight is spent in open-air camping, enjoying a sky filled with thousands of stars. Overnight: Open-air camping
Altitude: 125 meters below sea level

Day 2: Ahmedela – Dallol – Erta Ale

Early morning drive to Dallol, famous for its salt domes, colorful geothermal pools, sulphur springs, and geysers. This surreal landscape, shaped by intense volcanic and geothermal activity, feels truly otherworldly. Spend the morning exploring this extraordinary terrain. Visit the dramatic salt canyons before continuing toward Erta Ale. En-route, you may witness the traditional salt-mining process, where salt is extracted by hand and loaded onto camels. Around 1,200 km² of the Danakil Depression is covered by salt. In the afternoon, proceed toward Erta Ale. After a relaxed light dinner, take a 30-minute walk to the summit crater of Erta Ale volcano to observe the active lava lake. Return to camp afterward for overnight rest. Overnight: Open-air camping

Day 3: Erta Ale – Semera – Fly to Addis Ababa

Early morning hike back to the crater rim to observe volcanic activity before sunrise. Descend to the campsite for breakfast, then begin the drive back to Semera. Optional stop at Lake Afdera for a refreshing swim and a visit to nearby hot springs. In the late afternoon, fly back to Addis Ababa.
