Day 1: Addis Ababa – Debre Libanos – Addis Ababa

After pick-up from Bole International Airport or your hotel in Addis Ababa, begin a scenic drive north through Ethiopia’s highlands. Passing traditional villages and rolling farmland, travel approximately 115 km (about 2.5 hours) to Debre Libanos Monastery, one of the most respected religious sites in the country.

On arrival, start your visit at the monastery museum, home to an impressive collection of ancient handwritten Bibles, religious manuscripts, crosses, ceremonial clothing, and traditional artifacts used over centuries.

Continue to the main church, where you will explore the interior adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows and visit the tomb of Saint Tekle Haymanot, the monastery’s founder and one of Ethiopia’s most venerated saints.

Next, visit the historic Portuguese Bridge, built in the 16th century, offering spectacular views over the dramatic Jemma River Gorge. The area is also famous for sightings of the endemic Gelada monkeys, often seen grazing along the cliffs. Enjoy a relaxing lunch overlooking the Jemma Gorge, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. In the afternoon, drive back to Addis Ababa through one of Ethiopia’s major teff-growing regions, learning about the grain used to make injera, Ethiopia’s staple food. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.
